I *totally* fear dying in a fire too. I'll sometimes end up wide-eyed in bed at 1am just thinking about it.

And then, once, I was housesitting and woke up because something was flickering and I saw the shadows of flames and totally freaked. Instead of thinking of actual fire, my brain though damnation (really).

I snuck out to the hallway and peered into the living room where the gas fireplace was on. Still freaked me out and I couldn't turn it off. Phoned the non-emergency fire station and he suggested that if there is a thermostat next to the fireplace it is set to come on at night to give a quick heat to the house. Yep.
